The inspiration of this piece unfolded unexpectedly, sparked by the remnants of coffee grounds left at the bottom of my cup. Captivated by the intricate patterns they formed, I felt compelled to photograph and then draw what had emerged. It was only later that I stumbled upon the concept of coffee readings, realizing the deeper significance embedded in these shapes.

As I embellished the drawing with additional details and colors, a profound understanding dawned upon me. The symbolism within the artwork spoke of a spiritual message centered around the protection of what is sacred, the defenseless, and those unable to shield themselves. This revelation added a profound layer of meaning to the creation, transforming it into a testament to the guardianship of the vulnerable and the preservation of what is precious.

I am submitting "Grandfather Thunderbird with Children and Other Small Birds." The inspiration for this vision came from a coffee reading not long after the 215 children were found in graves at the old residential school. The news deeply hurt me, and I found myself consumed with anger and hatred towards the residential school system for what the children endured. However, this vision came to me, and I felt compelled to paint it. The process of creating this artwork brought me peace and a sense of understanding, knowing that the children have returned home to their ancestors in the spirit world. Aye hay.

This painting was inspired by a transformative dream of my late grandmother at a critical point in my life, struggling with alcohol addiction and severe despair. At 17, after a nearly fatal attempt, I dreamt of my nokom in a familiar woodland where we once picked berries. She sat by a fire in a clear circle and told me, "Keep the fire going." Her words became a guiding light through my challenges and recovery, reminding me of the enduring presence and support of my ancestors.

To honor her profound impact, I depicted a woman with a fire in her heart, symbolizing the strength and guidance passed down through generations. This artwork is a tribute to my nokom's wisdom and the resilience it inspired in me.

This visual poetry speaks to the cycle of life, where endings are intertwined with beginnings, and decay gives way to growth. Her crown is woven with the braids of her strength,
And your crown is made from what you don today,

Her grown is crafted by moonlight,
And the clothing you don is your armor from now on,

Her throne may be among the stars,
But the High Priestess stands with you,
Wherever you are.

𝗽𝗲𝘆𝗮𝗸𝗼𝘀𝗸â𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘄𝗮𝗸  by Betty Pewapisconias

As a child, we were told that our wealth comes from the abundance of people who love us, and to be part of the family was to be a part of something bigger than ourselves. My aunties would always remind me that we were rich. We didn’t need the newest electronics with an endless supply of cousins to play with. We didn’t need to eat at fancy restaurants because there was no way it would be as tasty as Auntie’s deer meat stews. Most of all, wealth has nothing to do with possessions but has everything to do with how much you loved and were loved by your family.

Social Media will never warm your heart like the hugs your sisters will give you, Money will never provide you happiness like the laugh of your firstborn nephew, and capitalism/consumerism will never be there to fill the void of your emptiness like your family will.

Whether we have blended, joint, traditional, extended, same-sex, or chosen families, we are peyakoskanewowak - They are one family. Protect it. Family is sacred.

Iskotew by Betty Pewapisconias

Our first home, protector and provider was a woman. The wome in my life were my protectors, my teachers and the warriors who have kept my Iskotew safe. They showed me the duality of having strength and the power of being gentle.

Growing up, my community is flooded with lateral violence, sexism, and misogyny. I remember going to ride with my dad and brother, and the old saggy men and their sons always had something to say.

I remember being verbally harassed, mocked, and being sexualized as a child by the men and their sons in my community. Sometimes they would go as far as attack my horse while I was away - No one protected us, but there came a time when I realized no one would.

I had three horses - A was a sassy grey, an *sshole buckskin, and a boney bay. Misunderstood, just like myself, but we found comfort in each other.

The men would yell “Hit him.” “You have to make him, you're the boss!” “Don't let him boss you around, whip him if you have to” and I've tried, but I knew that breaking the spirit of a horse was not my way.

I used to sneak away with my horses after school and work on them - No whips, no spurs, and sometimes we didn't even ride. We would just walk, talk and sometimes I would cry to them; I asked them “why can't we get along?” In that moment I felt understood what we both needed - Iskotew Strength.

Strength has nothing to do with force but the awareness of when you can be gentle.

I spent the next summers bonding and working with my horse. Getting thrown off as we broke old habits, but we built new ones - With every sound and touch came with an understanding of each other. The arena became ours, the race was already won, and the jobs we would do would be done before it even started. In that time, we grew to understand each other, and we were each others strength.

The harassment didn't stop, but we needed no protection. Men tried to claim my horses or label our hard work as theirs, and would eat humble pie as my horses would kick or throw them off. We learned we didn't have to take the abuse, and that we could be safe with each other.

The duality of fire means we could have burned it all down or build something new. It was a critical moment in my teen life where I realized that “how things are” did not have to be permanent, and that I had the power to forge what can be.

I could heal.

It has been more than four years since matriarchs and my protectors have now passed on, but I honour their lives and teachings for showing me the meaning behind Iskotew - I honour the spirit of my matriarchs, Iskotew and Misatim spirits who have orovided me with the skills I need to forge my own path.

Iskotew was made in a time of mourning, but let it be a reflection of all the respect I have, allnstrength I see, all the love I feel and all power that lives within our Iskwew (women.)

Tapwe, I see and honour you too.
